Sporting prowess has never been my forte.  Never even been my passion. I have but followed it from a comfortable distance.

But to see those for whom sport in all its variety is a serious way of life, I am filled with admiration.  Not only for their achievements, but for what they have put into the build-up for their Day of Competition at whatever venue or level this may be.  It THE day on which they show to the watching world, of what it is they are made, physically, emotionally and mentally.

Even among athletes who come last in their event, there are no losers.

Very few of those watching will ever get near to the big-time arena, or any other sporting field.  But in this business of ordinary everyday life and living there is much we can learn from those athletes of all shades.

Everyday provides opportunities to put into practice within our own life and living, something of their ethos, and their approach to their sport.

Back in 1994 a song was written which could be well used as the national theme song for everyone.  It was written by George Shearing and Nat ‘King’ Cole.  Take a look at these lyrics, and a listen to the song via YouTube.

Pick Yourself Up

Now nothing’s impossible, I’ve found for when my chin is on the ground,
I pick myself up, dust myself off, and start all over again.
Don’t lose your confidence if you slip, be grateful for a pleasant trip,
And pick yourself up, dust off, start over again.
Work like a soul inspired until the battle of the day is won.
You may be sick and tired, but you’ll be a man, my son.
Will you remember the famous men who have to fall to rise again,
So take a deep breath, pick yourself up, start all over again.

You gotta work like a soul inspired until the battle of the day is won.
You may be sick and tired, but you’ll be a man, my son.
